Jose Manuel Torres Gonzalez `16

Jose Manuel will be lovingly remembered as a husband, son, brother, mentor, and friend to many. Manuel’s name means “God is with us”. He believed in God and everything good.

 Manuel was kind, extraordinary, courageous, strong, handsome, selfless, humble, and incredibly intelligent. To know Manuel was to love Manuel. He had the sweetest smile and kindest eyes. He had an innocent sense of humor and loved to laugh. He was the most generous and always ready to help someone in need. He did many amazing things in his life but would never talk about himself. He preferred to listen to others and be there for them. We will always remember his peaceful disposition and his remarkable ability to face life’s cruelty with enduring sweetness. 

 Manuel’s lucky t-shirt was an old orange one with “Cafe Capri” monogrammed on it. He wore it so much that it now has many tiny holes in it. The Cafe Capri t-shirt was originally designed to promote a little cafe his maternal grandfather owned. The Gonzalez family decided to name the cafe “Capri” as a shortened form of the Spanish word “capricho” which means a cute whim, impulse, or caprice that one passionately desires. Cafe Capri was Manuel’s grandfather's dream come true and capricho. So when Manuel wore that shirt he felt like his grandfather was right there with him helping him reach his dreams. Manuel was his grandfather’s youngest and most favorite grandchild. So much so that when his grandfather became sick with cancer, he would request 2-year-old Manuel’s presence as a way to brighten his day and smile. 

 Manuel was always very proud of his Mexican upbringing.He was born on October 30th 1992 in the city of Mante, Tamaulipas. He was raised on tacos, Mexican glass cokes, and his favorite dessert, chocoflan. He grew up passionate about Mexican culture from learning classic Mexican folk songs on the guitar to collecting little “luchador” figurines and gifting luchador masks to anyone he befriended. If anyone ever received a luchador mask from him, they should consider themselves honored. As a child he treasured his luchadores so much, he would not play with them but rather line them up and memorize every detail about every luchador in his collection. 

 As a teenager, Manuel was just as driven and full of life. He earned the karate black belt at just 14 years old (and he could still do the splits and kick ass as a 30 year old). He was also a video game expert and set the record as the number 1 player in all of FIFA Mexico in 2011, winning 117 continuous soccer matches.

 At age 16, Manuel earned a full scholarship to attend boarding high school in the states. There he made many friends from all over the world and was a part of most school organizations. He even joined the small cheerleading team to help lift the girls during their routines. He quickly became accustomed to being a United States student and teenager but would still miss his family. He looked forward to traveling to Mante every December to spend Christmas with his maternal grandmother, Rosario, who helped raise him.

 Manuel graduated high school as the salutatorian and earned a full scholarship to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at the University of Texas A&M. While a student at A&M, he worked as a horticulture and biochemistry laboratory assistant under many professors who grew to respect and care for him. During his senior year at A&M, he met his wife, Sheila, at the Memorial Student Center. They quickly became best friends and fell in love. They would spend almost every second together studying, going on long walks through campus, eating pizza, and going to the movies. They grew up and became adults together. 

 After graduating from Texas A&M in 2016, he earned a full scholarship to pursue a phD in Biochemistry at the University of Houston. Manuel worked countless hours contributing to the university’s biochemical research and helped hundreds of undergrad students understand difficult concepts and complete their degrees. He became a very popular and loved teacher and mentor across the student body of biochemistry undergraduates. Halfway through the program, he realized he wanted to dedicate more time enjoying life and being with his wife, so in 2018 graduated early with a Masters in Biochemistry. Soon after, Manuel found a job he absolutely loved as a supervisor at Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies. He became very passionate about his job and enjoyed working late hours when the world was quiet. He was very loved, appreciated, and admired for his hard work, kindness, and dedication by all of his coworkers. 

 Manuel loved to play guitar and could play any song by ear. He was always willing to learn his wife’s favorite songs and serenade her at any moment. He had the most beautiful singing voice. His all time favorite artist was Luis Miguel. Some of his favorite songs to play were “Entra en Mi Vida” by Sin Bandera, “Danny’s Song” by Loggins and Messina, and “Vuelve” by Reik. He also loved to listen to music. Some of his favorite songs to listen to were “Un Te Amo” and “Sueña” by Luis Miguel, “Te Quiero Tanto, Tanto” by Onda Vaselina, and “Infinitamente Tuyo” by Noel Schajris.

 Manuel was a simple, laid back, and easy-going guy. He would look forward to doing the same thing every weekend which was ordering tacos or pizza and drinking beer (a corona or pineapple truly) with his wife on the couch watching tv. His favorite movies were “While You Were Sleeping” and “The Kid”. His favorite tv shows were “Luis Miguel: The Series” and “Cobra Kai”. He loved Aggie football, Canelo Alvarez, and the Los Tigres soccer team. He loved horror movies and dressing up for Halloween. He loved the color pink and playing FIFA and Super Mario playstation games. He loved celebrating his birthday at Six Flags every year. He found true joy in everyday things like playing with his little dog, Nova, getting ice cream, and going out to dinner with family. On the Fourth of July, he loved eating hot dogs, listening to Star-Spangled Banner covers on Youtube, and watching fireworks with Sheila. And he loved this country so much that he worked endlessly to become a citizen of the United States on April 19th 2024. He truly reached the American Dream. 

Among all the great things he achieved in his life, Manuel always said the greatest day of his life was when he met Sheila. And that the second greatest day of his life was when they got married. He loved to take care of her and loved that she would push him out of his comfort zone. With Sheila, he tried new foods, went skydiving, traveled to see oceans and snowy mountains, and dreamed new dreams. Anytime she was upset, he would always say “es solo un zero a la izquierda” which translates to “it’s just a left-sided zero”.The phrase means that adding a zero on the left side of any number does not affect the value. He would remind Sheila to not let all the bad in the world affect her happiness, just like a left-sided zero. 

 Manuel only ever gave kindness and the world, in return, seemed to always smile at him for his pure heart. When he and Sheila would go out to dinner, strangers would often come up and pay for their meal and offer blessings. It was like an unspoken truth that Manuel and Sheila were soulmates. He was a true gentleman and always made Sheila feel like the most beautiful and loved woman in the world. His term of endearment for Sheila was “Besito” which means “small kiss” in Spanish. He would never spend on things for himself but rather saved for the house he wanted to give to his wife, the dream wedding in a beautiful church he wanted to give to his wife, and the baby girl he wanted to have with his wife. He would always wear the same old t-shirts and jeans but did anything and everything to give Sheila the most beautiful life. He loved her deeply and everlastingly. He fought to be with her until his last breath. 

 Those of us who are still on earth will never understand why such a brilliant and good young man had to become an angel so soon. But our hearts will always hold his lovely memory. No matter how aggressive the cancer became, he never stopped smiling, he was never irritable, he never felt sorry for himself, and he never spoke an unkind word. Manuel fought for his life for almost two years and did it fearlessly and astonishingly joyfully. When he lost his ability to eat, he was genuinely happy to see others enjoying food, one of the most beautiful privileges of life. When he lost his tongue and his jaw, he was grateful to listen to others’ stories. When he could no longer move, he loved to listen to music and Sheila’s laugh. When he lost his hearing, he loved seeing Sheila smile. When he could no longer see, he loved when his mothers (Hilda and Josefina) kissed his forehead and when Sheila held his hand. He always remained grateful no matter how much was lost. He held onto hope until his last breath. He held on to his love for others until the light left his eyes. He never changed the wonderful person he was. “It was an honor and privilege to care for such a valiant, strong, and kind man” said every nurse and doctor that ever helped care for Manuel. When he died, he was the same beautiful boy as when he was born. 

 Manuel is survived by his wife, Sheila Angeles; his mother, Hilda Gonzalez; his father, Noe Torres; his brothers, Carlos Torres Gonzalez and Alan Angeles; his nephew, Charlie Torres Gonzalez; his mother-in-law (who was a second mother), Josefina Castillo; his father-in-law, Jose Antonio Angeles; his dog, Nova; and many more family members and friends.  

Manuel is reunited in heaven with his maternal grandmother, Rosario Balandrano de Gonzalez; his maternal grandfather, Manuel Gonzalez Montemayor; his paternal grandmother, Francisca Martinez de Torres; his paternal grandfather, Jose Torres Medrano; and his cousin, Rafael Martinez.  

His family and friends are incredibly blessed to have known and loved Manuel for the amount of time God gifted him to us. His story is legendary. May we carry his bravery, strength, humility, and goodness with us forever. May we keep his light and love with us until we have the privilege of being with him again in heaven. May our hearts be comforted by the loving and extraordinary life Manuel lived.

José Manuel será recordado con cariño como esposo, hijo, hermano, mentor y amigo para muchos. El nombre de Manuel significa "Dios está con nosotros”. El creía en Dios y en todo lo bueno.

Manuel era bueno, extraordinario, valiente, fuerte, guapo, desinteresado, humilde e increíblemente inteligente. Conocer a Manuel era amar a Manuel. Tenía la sonrisa más dulce y los ojos más amables. Tenía un inocente sentido del humor y le encantaba reír. Era el más generoso y siempre estaba dispuesto a ayudar a quien lo necesitara. Hizo muchas cosas maravillosas en su vida pero nunca hablaba de sí mismo. Prefería escuchar a los demás y estar ahí para ellos. Siempre recordaremos su carácter pacífico y su notable capacidad para afrontar la crueldad de la vida con dulzura imperecedera.  

La camiseta de la suerte de Manuel era una vieja camiseta naranja con el monograma "Café Capri". Lo usó tanto que ahora tiene muchos agujeros chiquitos. La camiseta Café Capri fue diseñada originalmente para promocionar un pequeño café del cual su abuelo materno era dueño. La familia Gonzalez decidió llamar al café “Capri” como una forma abreviada de la palabra “capricho”. Café Capri fue el capricho y sueño hecho realidad del abuelo de Manuel. Entonces, cuando Manuel usaba esa camiseta, sentía que su abuelo estaba ahí con él, ayudándolo a alcanzar sus sueños. Manuel era el nieto más pequeño y favorito de su abuelo. Tanto es así que cuando su abuelo enfermó de cáncer, solicitaba la presencia de Manuel, de 2 añitos, para alegrarle el día y hacerlo sonreír. 

Manuel siempre estuvo muy orgulloso de su crianza mexicana. Nació el 30 de octubre de 1992 en la ciudad de Mante, Tamaulipas. Se crió con tacos, coca-cola, y su postre favorito, el chocoflan. Creció apasionado por la cultura mexicana, desde aprender canciones populares mexicanas clásicas en la guitarra hasta coleccionar pequeñas figuras de luchadores y regalar máscaras de luchador a cualquiera con quien se hiciera amigo. Si alguien alguna vez recibió una máscara de luchador de él, debería considerarlo un honor. Cuando Manuel era niño, valoraba tanto a sus luchadores que no jugaba con ellos, sino que los alineaba y memorizaba cada detalle de cada luchador de su colección. 

Cuando era adolescente, Manuel era igual de motivado y lleno de vida. Obtuvo el cinturón negro de kárate de solo 14 años de edad (y todavía podía hacer splits y partir la m**** a los 30 años de edad). También fue un experto en videojuegos y estableció el récord como jugador número 1 de toda la FIFA México en 2011, ganando 117 partidos de fútbol continuos. 

A los 16 años, Manuel obtuvo una beca completa para asistir a un internado de escuela preparatoria en los Estados Unidos. Allí hizo muchos amigos de todo el mundo y formó parte de la mayoría de las organizaciones escolares. Incluso se unió al pequeño equipo de porristas para ayudar a levantar a las muchachas durante sus rutinas. Rápidamente se acostumbró a ser un estudiante y adolescente estadounidense, pero aun así extrañaría a su familia. Esperaba con emoción viajar a Mante cada diciembre para pasar la Navidad con su abuelita materna, Rosario, quien ayudó a criarlo. 

Manuel se graduó de la escuela preparatoria como salutatoriano y obtuvo una beca completa para obtener una licenciatura en bioquímica en la Universidad de Texas A&M. Mientras estudiaba en A&M, trabajó como asistente de laboratorio de horticultura y bioquímica con muchos profesores que llegaron a respetarlo y estimarlo. Durante su último año en A&M, conoció a su esposa, Sheila, en el Memorial Student Center. Rápidamente se convirtieron en mejores amigos y se enamoraron. Pasaban casi cada segundo juntos estudiando, dando largos paseos por el campus, comiendo pizza y yendo al cine. Crecieron y se convirtieron en adultos juntos. 

Después de graduarse de Texas A&M en 2016, obtuvo una beca completa para realizar un doctorado en bioquímica en la Universidad de Houston. Manuel trabajó innumerables horas contribuyendo a la investigación bioquímica de la universidad y ayudó a cientos de estudiantes universitarios a comprender conceptos difíciles y completar sus títulos. Se convirtió en un maestro y mentor muy popular y querido entre el cuerpo estudiantil de estudiantes universitarios de bioquímica. A mitad del programa, se dio cuenta de que quería dedicar más tiempo a disfrutar de la vida y estar con su esposa, por lo que en 2018 se graduó anticipadamente con una Maestría en Bioquímica. Poco después, Manuel encontró un trabajo que le encantaba como supervisor en Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies. Se apasionó mucho por su trabajo y disfrutaba trabajando hasta muy tarde cuando el mundo estaba tranquilo. Fue muy querido, apreciado y admirado por su arduo trabajo, amabilidad y dedicación por parte de todos sus compañeros de trabajo.  

A Manuel le encantaba tocar la guitarra y podía tocar cualquier canción de oído. Siempre estaba dispuesto a aprenderse las canciones favoritas de su esposa y darle una serenata en cualquier momento. Tenía la voz más hermosa para cantar. Su artista favorito de todos los tiempos era Luis Miguel. Algunas de sus canciones favoritas para tocar eran “Entra en Mi Vida” de Sin Bandera, “Danny’s Song” de Loggins y Messina y “Vuelve” de Reik. También le encantaba escuchar música. Algunas de sus canciones favoritas para escuchar eran “Un Te Amo” y “Sueña” de Luis Miguel, “Te Quiero Tanto, Tanto” de Onda Vaselina, y “Infinitamente Tuyo” de Noel Schajris. 

Manuel era un muchacho sencillo, relajado y tranquilo. Esperaba felizmente hacer lo mismo todos los fines de semana: pedir tacos o pizza y beber cerveza (una corona o una “Truly” de piña) con su esposa en el sofá viendo la televisión. Sus películas favoritas eran "While You Were Sleeping” y “The Kid”. Sus programas de televisión favoritos eran “Luis Miguel: La Serie” y “Cobra Kai”. Le encantaba el Aggie fútbol americano, Canelo Álvarez y el equipo de fútbol Los Tigres. Le encantaban las películas de terror y disfrazarse para Halloween. Le encantaba el color rosa y jugar a los juegos de playstation de FIFA y Super Mario. Le encantaba celebrar su cumpleaños en Six Flags cada año. Encontraba verdadera alegría en las cosas cotidianas, como jugar con su perrita Nova, tomar un helado y salir a cenar con su familia. El 4 de julio, le encantaba comer hot dogs, escuchar portadas de Star-Spangled Banner en Youtube, y ver fuegos artificiales con Sheila. Y amaba tanto a este país que trabajó sin cesar para convertirse en ciudadano de los Estados Unidos el 19 de abril de 2024. Realmente alcanzó el sueño americano. 

Entre todas las grandes cosas que logró en su vida, Manuel siempre dijo que el día más bonito de su vida fue cuando conoció a Sheila. Y que el segundo gran día de su vida fue cuando se casaron. Le encantaba cuidarla y le encantaba que ella lo sacara de su zona de confort. Con Sheila, probó nuevas comidas, hizo paracaidismo, viajó para ver océanos y montañas nevadas y tuvo nuevos sueños. Cada vez que ella estaba molesta, él siempre decía "es solo un zero a la izquierda". La frase significa que agregar un cero en el lado izquierdo de cualquier número no afecta el valor. Le recordaba a Sheila que no permitiera que todo lo malo del mundo afectará su felicidad, como un cero del lado izquierdo. 

Manuel sólo daba bondad y el mundo, de regreso, parecía sonreírle siempre por su corazón puro. Cuando él y Sheila salían a cenar, a menudo venían extraños, pagaban la comida y ofrecían bendiciones. Era como una verdad tácita que Manuel y Sheila eran almas gemelas. Era un verdadero caballero y siempre hacía sentir a Sheila como la mujer más bella y amada del mundo. Su término cariñoso para Sheila era "Besito". Nunca gastaba en cosas para sí mismo, sino que ahorraba para la casa que quería regalarle a su esposa, la boda de sueños en una hermosa iglesia que quería regalarle a su esposa, y la bebe que quería tener con su esposa. Siempre usaba las mismas camisetas y pantalones viejos, pero hacía cualquier cosa para darle a Sheila la vida más hermosa. Él la amaba profunda y eternamente. Luchó por estar con ella hasta su último aliento. 

Los que todavía estamos en la tierra nunca entenderemos por qué un joven tan brillante y bueno tuvo que convertirse en ángel tan pronto. Pero nuestros corazones siempre guardarán su hermoso recuerdo. No importaba qué tan agresivo se volviera el cáncer, Manuel nunca dejaba de sonreír, nunca estaba irritable, nunca sentía lástima por sí mismo y nunca dijo ni una palabra desagradable. Manuel luchó por su vida durante casi dos años y lo hizo sin miedo y con una alegría asombrosa. Cuando perdió la capacidad de comer, se sentía genuinamente feliz de ver a otros disfrutar de la comida, uno de los privilegios más hermosos de la vida. Cuando perdió la lengua y la mandíbula, agradecía esuchar las historias de los demás. Cuando ya no podía moverse, le encantaba escuchar música y la risa de Sheila. Cuando perdió la audición, le encantaba ver a Sheila sonreír. Cuando ya no podía ver, amaba cuando sus madres (Hilda y Josefina) le besaban la frente y cuando Sheila le tomaba la mano. Siempre permaneció agradecido sin importar cuánto perdiera. Mantuvo la esperanza hasta su último aliento. Se aferró a su amor por los demás hasta que la luz abandonó sus ojos. Nunca cambió la maravillosa persona que era. “Fue un honor y un privilegio cuidar a un hombre tan valiente, fuerte y amable”, dijeron todas las enfermeras y médicos que alguna vez ayudaron a cuidar a Manuel. Cuando murió, era el mismo niño hermoso que cuando nació. 

A Manuel le sobreviven su esposa, Sheila Angeles; su madre, Hilda Gonzalez; su padre, Noe Torres; sus hermanos, Carlos Torres Gonzalez y Alan Angeles; su sobrino, Charlie Torres Gonzalez; su suegra (quien fue segunda madre), Josefina Castillo; su suegro, Jose Antonio Angeles; su perrita, Nova; y muchos más familiares y amigos. 

Manuel se reencuentra en el cielo con su abuela materna, Rosario Balandrano de Gonzalez; su abuelo materno, Manuel Gonzalez Montemayor; su abuela paterna, Francisca Martinez de Torres; su abuelo paterno, Jose Torres Medrano; y su primo, Rafael Martinez. 

Su familia y amigos están increíblemente bendecidos por haber conocido y amado a Manuel durante el tiempo que Dios nos lo regaló. Su historia es legendaria. Que llevemos con nosotros para siempre su valentía, fuerza, humildad y bondad. Que mantengamos su luz y su amor con nosotros hasta que tengamos el privilegio de estar con él nuevamente en el cielo. Que nuestros corazones sean reconfortados por la amorosa y extraordinaria vida que vivió Manuel.
